Find the rainbow, taste the rainbow

Find the rainbow, taste the rainbow
I'm not always keen on recycling other mottos, but that one fits perfectly to smelt fishing. That little baitfish is really popular in Estrie (Quebec)and the traditional way of fishing for it is with a net in spring in small creeks.
We're not talking about that here cause I'd like you to know who to fish for them on the ice. If you have a sonar or a flasher, you'll find them quickly. If you're still blind, it'll need a bit of time to get to them but the party's on as soon as you get your first one. You'll need a bobber stopper that you'll put on your line to easily get back to the depth you found them in.
Smelts also betray their predators, as salmonids are often found around them, chasing them away. You will sometimes hook something way more big when targeting them, which makes it way more fun.
Wether you're eating them or using them as bait (in zone 6, remember you can only get and keep 120 of them), the technique used is really simple. Your equipment must be as light as it can be. Choose an ultra light rod, with a little drop shot rig, and #16 to #20 hooks (no more than 3, remember). Then, put some maggots on them and wait for the tip of your rod to bend slightly. You'll need to adjust a little bit if you're new at it but after that, you're gonna have fun!

Happy smelt fishing!
